Rome and Juliet

Shakespeare explores revenge and its destructive consequences firstly by setting the play Romeo and Juliet in the middle of an ongoing fued between each others families. He then shows the consequences of revenge through the death of the two main characters Tybalt and Mercutio. Finally to wrap it all up he delivers a moral lesson at the end – that no good comes from revenge shown by the death of the two young lovers Romeo and Juliet.

As it says in the prologue “two households… in fair Verona where we lay our scene… from ancient grudge break new mutiny…” This “ancient grudge” is made apparent in the first scene where there is an aggressive street brawl between the two families. “in fair Verona” is the scene for Romeo and Juliet. This love of theirs is doomed from the start, their “Death-mark’d love” is doomed by the two families ongoing strife. The explosion of violence in the first scene explains that Romeo and Juliet is as much about violence as it is about love.

Revenge and its consequences are no good. The consequences of the revenge happen about half way in the play and is also a major turning point for Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. Tybalt is angered by Romeo crashing the party so he wants to exact revenge in a duel with Romeo. Romeo hears of this challenge and tries to make peace because they are now family but Tybalt doesn’t know this. Mercutio is angered by Tybalts attempts of revenge and Romeo not fighting back that he draws his weapon and fights Tybalt. Romeo distracts Mercutio in this skirmish which results in Mercutio dying. Romeos role of peace keeper turns to the role of avenger as Mercutio dies in his arms. He chases Tybalt and kills him in revenge for Mercutio’s death. For this action Romeo is banished by Prince. This signifies that nothing good ever comes from revenge and its destructive and deadly consequences.

Nothing good ever comes from revenge. This statement is made true by the death of the two star crossed lovers deaths at the end of the play. Romeo is shocked by the news of his loves deaths so he goes and gets poison to kill himself because he didn’t know she wasn’t really dead. He thinks she took her life in revenge for his banishment but it was really so they could be together. He is driven to take his own life upon thoughts of his actions and kills himself. Juliet wakes up and kills herself because she sees Romeo dead next to her. This is her revenge on herself for making him do this. This proves that revenge has VERY destructive consequences.

In conclusion the strife that the two families had with each other was so vengeful that it drove the two lovers to kill themselves. This essay proves that revenge has nothing but bad consequenses by Tybalts death, Mercutios death and the deaths of the two lovers Romeo and Juliet
