Film Essay

Samson and Delilah

Thornton uses props to create a negative view of Samson by making him a substance abusive petrol sniffing addict. This prop is introduced at the very start of the film. Samson awakeds and takes a big sniff of petrol to kickstart his day. The negative view being formed here is of Samson because the first scene shows that he is addicted to sniffing petrol from the very beginning. This constant abuse of petrol is inhaled throughout the film by Samson. I think that Samson is a very unlikable character because he is a drug addict. The repetition of the can always in Samson’s hand encouraged me to view Samson as an unmotivated, unlikable drug addict.

Thornton uses cinematography in the form of a high angle longshot to describe Samsons relationship with his village. After being beaten by his brother he leaves the village and goes on top of a ledge and looks down on his village. This high angle longshot shows his dislocation, alienation and disconnection he now has with his culture. The second longshot is of Samson as he walks away from the village and his culture. These techniques used by thornton helep form a negative view of Samson because he gave up on his family, his culture and his home.

The final technique I am writing about is lighting. When Samson is beaten by his brother, the light goes dark and stays dark until he leaves which reflects his mood. When Samson overdoses on perol the light goes to black but he is saved by a bright light, Delilah. These show that the lighting highlights the dark moments of samsons life. This forms a negative view of Samson because he is usually surrounded by dark light and it inflicts on his character in a very negative way.

In conclusion, thornton uses props cinematography and lighting to encourage a negative view of Samson.
